Its 15” illuminated flat-panel front design features a parabolic mirror-backed reflector and UV filter that, along with two 18 W fluorescent bulbs (over 150 W incandescent equivalent), deliver the perfect balance of focused, yet diffuse, ambient lighting at 10,000 Lux—even up to 14” away.
Made in Canada with QAI safety approval.
Like any form of treatment, the most important predictive marker for successfully managing SAD or Winter Blues using bright light therapy is consistency. Light therapy can be effective in as little as 3 weeks, but its positive effects tend not to endure when people stop their treatment early. So, making a product that’s as easy on the eyes as it is to use remains key to the design of all our products, and the BOXelite is no exception.
That’s why we’ve designed the BOXelite to be as easy to use as possible. By providing 10,000 Lux at 14”, it eliminates the need to sit up close, freeing you up to use your BOXelite while you eat breakfast, drink your morning coffee, read, or put on your makeup. The cool, white light we’ve engineered the BOXelite to provide ensures minimum glare, and its large (12” X 15”), flat front surface delivers illumination over a wide enough area that you can move around comfortably in front of your lamp without sacrificing the brightness necessary for lasting, effective relief.
Psychiatrists recommend getting 10,000 Lux bright light therapy for at least 20min each morning. But, it’s important to consider that the brighter your lamp, the less time you’ll need. If you prefer to sit a bit further away, you can still get effective treatment by extending your sessions.
Another important part of getting the most from your BOXelite is taking some simple, common-sense steps towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle. People suffering from SAD and other circadian disorders often do better when they eat a balanced diet, and exercise regularly. Crucially, a regular sleep-wake schedule reduces the effects of melatonin on mood, as well as the occurrence of headaches and “brain fog” (daily fatigue).
If you’re not experiencing the kind of relief you expected, there’s a chance you just need to troubleshoot your light therapy sessions so that they’re suited to you. Different people have different responses to morning bright light, so adjusting your therapy to meet your needs and keep you comfortable should be a priority. For instance, if the glare from the lamp gives you a mild headache, you’re probably sitting closer than your body needs, and you can adjust the distance to place the lamp further away. If you feel like you’re not seeing benefits after three weeks, try extending your light therapy sessions by 5 min for a week, until you’re at a duration that keeps you feeling your best.
TIPS
Use the light regularly at about the same time each day. Also try to spend time outdoors during sunny periods. Eat sensibly, exercise and try to keep regular sleep-wake hours.
Our bright light products attempt to replicate outdoor light.
To get light therapy your eyes must fall in the 10,000 Lux area.
Its large, flat, front-illuminated surfaceputs out brighter light, over a wider area, giving you the benefits of light therapy at comfortable distances. Smaller lamps often claim to put out 10,000 LUX, but almost never admit how close you’ll have to sit, because they know it’s impractical and uncomfortable.
As long as you keep the lamp’s surface visible, close enough to be therapeutic, and sit a safe distance from your monitor, the BOXelite will deliver clinically effective light therapy.
The Can-SAD clinical study found that patients improved more in just one week of bright light therapy than antidepressant administration, with much fewer side-effects.
According to the American National Institutes of Health, light therapy is a safe and effective treatment for SAD in children as young as 7 years old. However, people with medical conditions making them particularly light-sensitive should consult with their doctor. Light therapy can also worsen mania in patients with bipolar disorder.
